Spring Break

March 12th, 2010

Spring break is quickly approaching, and I can’t wait for it. While I love school, I’m very excited to get some projects around the house completed. In addition to the house, I have two school related projects to work on throughout the week. One is my senior design which I’m very excited about. It’s a bicycle collision avoidance system, and that’s all I can really say about it. It makes me excited, and it reminds me why I chose engineering. There’s just so many doors open to you once you complete your degree, and I highly recommend taking as many math classes while in high school.

The second project is learning SolidWorks. I created several projects that relate to the house to try and design in Solid Works which is a 3-D designing software used in a lot of engineer designing applications. So I’ll be sharing those as we get to those side projects with the house. Depending how those go, I may continue to design some things in the program as a nice way to combine my engineering and the house.

Now, unrelated to school, I have several big projects that involve the house, and some are very important to me to complete before we do our open house in May (squeal!).

First, I really want to get the upstairs cleaned up (like the library). Right now we have to pick and choose which projects we do until I complete my degree, so I really want to focus on the downstairs and the outside. So for now, the upstairs I just really want to get organized.

Second, I want to finish painting the bedroom. Right now we need to paint the last wall which is shown here, because we ran out of paint. We also purchased white paint to paint the trim in there as well as the ceiling which has varying colors currently. Steve wants to finish the drywall in the closet which I will post pictures of once we start. I’d also like to build and install the trim around the closet and main door for the bedroom. Because these the door was moved and the walk-in closet was built by the previous owners, they don’t have the trim around them. Also, the room doesn’t have the baseboards that are consistent throughout the house. While I’m not sure we’ll get to that during this spring break, I’d like to do the crown molding.

Lastly, the outside is a huge eye sore right now. There are a few plants out front which can be seen here:

Front of the House

I really want to clean up the stones that are used there, and I have some ideas for the plants that are there now. We also put up a fence shortly after this photo was taken, so it’s not the most recent. I want to move the fence back and paint it. This will give me some additional “front yard” in which to plant flowers and add curb appeal. We also don’t have a gate at the front yard, and this makes it difficult for guests to get to the yard when they come to visit. Since we plan to have lots of outdoor parties and entertaining, this is at the top of the list to fix.

So while it sounds overwhelming, we’re going to start this weekend prepping in between studying for finals, and we’re going to start spring cleaning. I’m off to get started!

Bloganistas

February 10th, 2010

I found this group (Bloganistas) on Flickr through a fellow blogger, here. I loved it, because I enjoy seeing all of the outfits and the scarfs. Oh, the scarfs! I see so many, and I love them. I’m not sure that I’ll be able to do it weekly, but I definitely use it for inspiration on what to wear. Here is what I was wearing for the job fair today before it was canceled due to the snow storm.

Goals for the Year 2010

January 2nd, 2010

I normally don’t do resolutions, but I do always  have goals for the year or things that I intend to complete. So here they are in all their glory, and I organized them by my most popular topics.

SCHOOL:

  1. Register, Take, and Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
  2. Get through Winter Quarter
  3. Get through Spring Quarter
  4. Do all the required hoop jumping, and successfully GRADUATE in June!
  5. Find sweet job between now and graduation.

HOUSE:

  1. Finish the bedroom: paint ceiling, add flooring, finish drywall, add crown molding
  2. Make utility room more functional: get other dryer working, add wall, close in dryer & washer, add storage
  3. Finish bathroom: find-purchase-install flooring, paint, add tile (remove junk that’s there now)
  4. Build porch swing for side porch
  5. Fence: move fence back, paint fence, add in front flower bed, install privacy fence where  needed
  6. Vegetable Garden: remove gravel, add “good” soil, plant
  7. Detached Garage: power wash, seal, paint, install flooring, add fridge & stove, put up for rent
  8. House warming party in March!!

BUSINESS:

  1. Do more on foot marketing at local businesses
  2. Promote, promote, promote
  3. Get website up and running tomorrow (woohoo!)

OTHER GOALS:

  1. Run Half-Marathon
  2. Run Marathon
  3. Go to Gatlinburg, TN for the first time for vacation with Steve and camp-depends on the season haha
  4. Go on a cruise/long vacation
  5. Learn to sew

Whew! That about covers it. I think all are reasonable, and they’re all things I was planning to do since about November.

Spring Quarter 2009 is Finished!

June 13th, 2009

I couldn’t be more relieved! Fall quarter always seems to drag a bit, but you have the entire Christmas break to look forward to! Winter is freezing outside, so being cooped inside doing schoolwork isn’t that bad. Then spring quarter rolls around. By the end of it flowers are blooming, and the weather is nice enough to sit outside. Clubs and organizations are having cookouts to raise money, and it’s not the easiest environment to keep on studying.

It’s finished though! Here’s to a weekend of semi-relaxing because on Monday I open up shop!

Women in Engineering

June 4th, 2009

One of the fantastic opportunities available to female students (males are included, too, though!) is the Society of Women Engineers. This organization is a national organization with chapters available in most all universities. From the chapter I’m with:

SWE is a non-profit educational service organization dedicated to making known the need for women engineers and encouraging young women to consider an engineering education.

One of the great things that many chapters do is try to inform and recruit younger girls (usually starting from 3rd grade) on up to take math classes and motivate them to pursue a career in engineering.

Engineering is not for everyone, but if you notice your child does have a strong background in the math in sciences, please help to nurture that. If there’s a university nearby, see what programs (many of them free!) they offer children. If only I had known when I was younger, but at least now I know for my future children.
