It’s a winner.

March 26th, 2010

I talked about ideas for the living room here, and I wasn’t sure about the fabric for the curtains. We did the reverse and chose a paint color rather than choosing that last, and for the most part it’s been wonderful. I love the wall color, and the plum just really adds a punch to the whole house.

So while I love the darker color, it’s been my project to lighten up the room as much as possible without being bland. This created some issues for me when deciding fabric for this room. I thought green would be a nice compliment, but I couldn’t find anything that was quirky enough for me until I went to IKEA. I’ve used Cecilia fabric before, but even when I had a piece of excess fabric strung over the existing fabric I wasn’t sure. So I went ahead and purchased 6 yards which would only be enough to cover one window (yes, I know). I used 3 yards to sew one panel, and the second 3 years is washed, ironed, pinned, and waiting to be sewn.

Here is how the fabric looks:

New curtains.

I must say that I LOVE it! I still need to sew the second panel for that window. I’ll need to buy 12 more yards to cover the second window you can see,and a third window in the other corner. The character and little pops of green compliment the plum, and the birds make my heart smile.

Bobber = Bobbin

December 30th, 2009

So for Christmas I asked for a sewing machine. I really wasn’t specific because I could find no one who really sewed that could lend some information or teach me. Steve purchased and wrapped a wonderful new Singer, and after a horrible first five hours I am now actually threading it properly and using it.

In my attempts to teach myself, I knew I needed a support system, so I found an online board (Sewing Mamas) that would accept a non-Mama and help. I am so grateful I did, because they were such a help when I was trying to figure out why my stitching was looking nice and pretty on one side and a hot mess on the other.

Learning to sew In fact, as I was rereading and trouble shooting, I realized I made the mistake of calling the bobbin a bobber, so I was in all kinds of a crazy state trying to get the dohickey to latch and the tension to pull. Eventually though, I got it, and I created this simple tote bag that I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it.

First Project

However, my next few projects are a bit more complex, and I can’t wait to use the fun fabric I found to use on my beginner projects.

Fabric Stash

I’m going to have to unplug the iron and sewing machine for a while though because we’re about to tackleĀ  painting the bedroom.
